Heather van Viegen, ASW

As a social worker who has been in the field for the last 6 years, I have had the amazing opportunity to connect with individuals who have faced a wide variety of experiences including severe mental illness, anxiety, depression, homelessness, chronic pain, physical disability, and incarceration. Throughout these years, I have had the chance to work in inpatient mental health crisis services, outpatient community mental health, homelessness services, as well as a residential treatment facility focusing on providing services to the LGBTQI+ community. My interests and specializations include anxiety, depression, mood disorders, negative body image, addiction and substance misuse, and disordered eating and exercise behaviors.

I firmly believe in providing psychotherapy  that centers around the individual and learning from one another based on our unique experiences. As humans we are unique and have different backgrounds, experiences, and challenges. Thus, I  tailor sessions to each individual person.  I do this by utilizing an eclectic approach that encompasses a combination of strengths-based, process-oriented, and affirmative styles of interventions. My theoretical orientation is primarily Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) in order to support individuals explore balance, acceptance, and development of skills to manage difficult emotions and targeted behaviors. My goal for therapy is to provide individuals with a safe space where we can collaborate, connect genuinely, and learn how to live a life filled with self-compassion and growth.

I hold a Bachelors and Masters degree in the field of Social Work and am currently registered with the BBS as an Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW#99768). I completed my clinical internship work in an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) program as well as providing therapy to LGBTQI+ adults in a substance abuse treatment center located in San Diego, CA. When I am not in the office, I love spending time at the beach, hiking, and reading a good novel at home with my cats, dogs, and bearded dragon.

I am supervised by Dr. Julia Rosengren, PSY29240.
